Man Headache

Migraines are a big deal and if you don’t think so then you probably have never had one.  They affect millions of people, account for many days of lost productivity as well as many hospital bills.  Luckily migraines have been studied quiet thoroughly and simple solutions can help you knock out migraines.

What Causes a Migraine Headache?

There are many triggers – the most common are:

  • Subluxation (misalignments to the head and neck that irritate nerves or alter joint function)
  • Sensitivity to foods, including alcohol, eggs, caffeine, dairy, artificial sweeteners and seasonings (MSG)and preservatives
  • Gluten allergy (gluten is in most baked goods, breads and doughs)
  • Medications
  • Stress
  • Vitamins or mineral deficiency ( B vitamins and magnesium are most common)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Severe changes to temperature or humidity
  • dehydration

Consider Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care for headaches and migraines is well documented.  “Over 70% of all headaches arise from problems in the cervical spine and its related structures”-Canadian Family Physician.

According to a randomized clinical trial that studied 123 migraine suffers.  72% noted improvement following Chiropractic care.  22% noted substantial improvement in intensity and frequency and another 50% had noticeable improvement in intensity, frequency and medication use.

Know your options

Remember not all migraines have the same cause.  That’s why it is important to know what is triggering migraines and not simply mask these symptoms with drugs.  Here are 5 easy things you can do that improve the majority of migraines.

Schedule a Chiropractic evaluation– Knowing is half the battle and with 70% of headaches being caused by problems in the neck, it’s best to start here.

  1. Do an elimination diet. Get rid of the common food allergens. Start with the most common issues and narrow it down from there.  Gluten, dairy, eggs
  2. Try magnesium. Take 300 to 600 milligrams twice a day.  Consider using Natural Calm a natural magnesium supplement.
  3. Try a B complex vitamin
  4. Balance your hormones to stop premenstrual migraines by exercising; eliminate or significantly reduce caffeine, alcohol, and sugar; and start eating unrefined plant foods, the more color on your plate the better.
  5. Drink plenty of water- dehydration is made worse with excess caffeine, alcohol or sugar.  The general rule is drink your body weight divided by 2 in ounces per day.  For example if you weigh 200Lbs; divide 200/2 and drink 100 ounces of water per day.
